This month’s selected model is the newly released Bachmann class 350/1 in London Midland livery. This model has been chosen by MKMRS member Mark Pollott. Mark knows quite a bit about the class 350 as he drives them for a living.
The British Class 350 Desiro is a class of electrical multiple unit built by Siemens AG in 2004–05 and 2008–09. Thirty of these units, designated Class 350/1, were built for use by Central Trains and Silverlink on regional express services and services on the southern section of the West Coast Main Line. A further 37 Class 350/2 were ordered by London Midland in late 2007. All 37 units were delivered and in service by July 2009.
The Bachmann model has been very well received by the modelling press and appears to have been selling well. Featuring full directional lighting, interior lights, a sprung pantograph and excellent reproduction of the subtle shapes of the real thing, the model represents a leap of faith by Bachmann into the world of 25Kv electric models. The two liveries so far – unbranded SRA blue/grey (as used by Silverlink on delivery of the units) and now London Midland grey/black/green – have been excellently reproduced to complete an excellent model.
