This month’s model favourite has been chosen by MKMRS member and Club Treasurer Bob Taylor. Bob is a member of our N gauge group and could be seen operating our exhibition layout, Norgate at the Warley show last November.

Bob has chosen the Graham Farish model of the BR Standard Class 5, presented in Midland Region 1950/60s condition. Bob especially likes the model as it looks excellent and runs very well indeed. As Bob notes, some earlier Graham Farish models were not reputed to be such good runners, but all recent models seem to run very well and this is no exception. Like Bob, this model can frequently seen operating on our Norgate layout.
The BR Standard Class 5 entry on Wikipedia states:
“The British Railways Standard Class 5MT 4-6-0 was one of the 12 standard classes of steam locomotive built by British Railways in the 1950s. It was essentially a development of the LMS Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 (“Black Five”). 172 were built between 1951 and 1957. The first of the class, 73000, was outshopped from Derby in April 1951 and 30 were in service by January 1952. There was then a gap in construction before Derby resumed building its remaining 100 engines. 42 were built at Doncaster, starting in August 1955 and finishing in May 1957, with Derby’s last engine following a month later.”
Apologies for the absence of a January Model Favourite; Not only did the club ‘move house’ but so did I. What with that and preparations required for our biggest ever exhibition, I’m afraid I ran out of time! Normal service will be resumed from now on.
